How Sex Dolls are made

The process of making a sex doll is complex, and there isn’t really much information available on how they actually come together. Let’s go through the 7 steps it takes to create these pieces of art!

1. Making a Mold

This is the very first step in making a doll: making a mold of their body. The shape and size are very important, as it determines how the final product looks. A professional designer is needed to draw out and map the proportions to ensure it looks as attractive as possible. Clearly, the proportions are very different than what you’d find in humans naturally, but there’s attention paid to make sure the dolls still look realistic.

Each body shape and size require a different mold, which can create a challenge since beauty is in the eye of the beholder. With that, designers have to try and meet as many wants as possible in each model, so that it can appeal to the broadest range of buyers. Most manufacturers use beauty standards to shape the doll, while some prefer unique designs (think 3-6 boobs, multiple sets of eyes, etc.) and specialize in the more avant garde dolls.

2. Creating the Skeleton

Some low-end dolls use a material that is similar to cartilage to create a skeleton, but this isn’t something you’ll see from any reputable vendor. The gold standard is to use stainless steel, which creates a much more structurally sound doll, as well as ensuring the doll will continue to function properly throughout its lifetime.

The stainless-steel skeletons have joints, so they can be posed and arranged in human-like positions with ease. Yoga skeletons specifically have even more joints and flexibility. There are many innovations being explored in the skeleton aspect of dolls to continue improving the realness, as well as the overall weight of the finished doll.

3. Attaching the Mold to the Skeleton

Okay, I realize that sounds bizarre – it is a delicate process, but not nearly as creepy as it sounds! At this point, the mold (silicone or TPE) is gently added to the skeleton and secured. This step requires tons of patience and if something is to go wrong, this is usually the step it happens at.

If the mold isn’t aligned just right, you can experience dimples, folds, and other deformations. These can’t be fixed, so any errors in this step essentially amounts to a total loss. The attention to detail plays into the overall quality of the finished product; the more perfected the seams and joints are, typically the more you can expect to spend.

4. Heating and Preparing the Materials

Once the mold is in place, it’s time to heat the TPE or silicone. This requires bringing the raw materials slowly up to the correct temperature, which can be up to 200°F for TPE. With TPE specifically, the exact formulation can also impact the end product, which is why it’s so important to know as much as possible before purchasing.

Once everything is hot and thoroughly mixed, the mixture is then slowly injected into the molds, which creates the body around the skeleton.

5. Cooling

With everything being crazy hot, you can’t just pop it out and hope it stays together. The doll then needs to be cooled over the course of a few hours – too cold too fast can shock the materials, so this has to be done with patience. The molds are either left in a coolant or clean, cool water for a few hours until everything is set.

6. Perfecting the Details

Once the mold is cooled, the doll is gently removed, and is then sent for detailing that can only be done by hand. Sometimes the molds can leave rough edges or little bits of glue will bubble out. These are carefully removed with a smoothing tool, which beyond making it feel better, also leads to the realistic look.

After everything is smoothed out, the dolls are then washed thoroughly, as they’re nearly ready. Fingernails and toenails are added, and if the doll passes inspection, talcum powder is added to keep the skin smooth and dry until it’s delivered to the consumer.

7. On with Her Head!

The body and heads are made separately because the head is much more complex. Most dolls are simply a mixture of different heads with different bodies, and once you change out makeup and hair, they can appear very different. While the process for the head is similar, it requires more artistry.

Once the head is out of the mold, a makeup artist does the doll up to look attractive. They can also add lashes and a wig, but sometimes the wigs are added separately. After they’re ready, they’re wrapped up and sent to the warehouse. Then, when an order is made, the correct head is chosen and added to the molded body. The doll is then complete, lined with foam pads, wrapped in blankets, and boxed for shipping.

Hopefully, you found this as interesting as I did! It’s always cool to know how these dolls come together from the time the order is made to when it arrives to the buyer. Like always, let me know what other questions you have about sex dolls!
